Do these things now
Stop using water
No flushing, showers, dishwasher, or laundry. Every gallon you use has nowhere to go but back up the drain.
Keep people and pets away
Sewage carries bacteria. Keep kids and pets away from wet areas in the yard and from any backed-up drain.
Don't use chemical drain cleaners
They won't clear a full tank, and they can harm the system and whoever opens the line next.
Call or text
Tell us your town, what you're seeing, and when the tank was last pumped. A photo helps.
Common causes of a backup
A full tank. The most common cause by far. When sludge and scum fill the tank, there's no room left and water backs up into the house. Pumping fixes it.
A clogged inlet or line. Wipes, grease, or roots can block the pipe between the house and tank, even when the tank isn't full. The line gets cleared and checked with a camera.
A clogged outlet filter. Filters do their job by catching solids, and eventually they clog. Cleaning it often restores flow right away.
A failing drain field. If the tank was pumped recently and backups keep happening, the field may not be accepting water. See drain field problems.
Spring snowmelt. High groundwater in March and April can saturate the drain field temporarily. Cutting water use helps, and pumping buys time.
